Today we're going to get creative with our lavender melt and pour soap making: instead of simply adding lavender flowers to the soap - and ending up with a rather scratchy bar (not a fan!) - we'll infuse the soap with lavender. To get all of lavender's beneficial properties into your soap, we'll "cook" it first and then strain the lavender out.
This project takes a little longer (1 hour) than your regular melt-and-pour soap project, but it's worth it. Who wouldn't want to receive a beautiful handmade soap made with natural ingredients and wonderful essential oils as a gift?

Equipment
- 16 oz mason jar with lid
- small saucepan filled with 2 inches of water
- fine mesh strainer
- spoon with a long handle
- silicone soap mold
- spray bottle with isopropyl alcohol (optional)
Ingredients
For 2 bars of soap, to double the recipe you'll need 2 mason jars
- ¼ cup dried lavender buds - if you grow your own you can use twigs and leaves as well
- 1 teaspoon water - to keep soap base liquid while melting
- 8 oz goat's milk soap base
- 15 drops of lavender essential oil
- 1 teaspoon colloidal oatmeal - you can make your own by finely grinding old-fashioned oats in a food processor or coffee grinder
How to Make Homemade Lavender Soap
- Cut the soap base into small cubes - use about ¼ of the entire soap block
- Fill the mason jar with lavender - If you don't want small lavender particles in your soap, rinse lavender before adding to the jar
- Add soap base, water and seal the lid
- Place the mason jar in a saucepan filled with 2 inches of water and set to low heat
- Let soap melt and infuse for 45 minutes - periodically check on the water level in the pan as it evaporates quickly
- Remove from heat
- Open lid (careful hot!)
- Add lavender oil and colloidal oatmeal, and stir the soap mixture with a long spoon
- Pour soap base through a sifter into the silicone molds
- Spray the top of the soap with rubbing alcohol to get rid of air bubbles (optional)
- Let cool for a couple of hours
- Unmold - pull of the sides of the mold first, then push from the bottom
- Store in a small airtight container or wrapped in plastic wrap - melt and pour soap should be kept away from moisture as much as possible
