While lotions offer hydration, their higher water content means they may not be as emollient as body butters.

Which is Better?
It depends on whether you have dry or dehydrated skin.
While they seem to be the same, there's a difference. Dry skin is a skin type that lacks oil, resulting in dry, rough, or itchy skin. Dehydrated skin is a skin condition caused by a lack of moisture, leading to a feeling of tightness, fine lines, and wrinkles.
You can find out if you have dehydrated skin by doing a simple pinch test. Gently pinch your skin between your thumb and index finger and let go. If your skin bounces back after 3 seconds, your hydration levels are good; if your skin stays creased, you need more hydration.
Most people have both in different areas of their body. Elbows, knees, and feet tend to be dry and benefit from applying body butter, while other parts need lotion to replenish moisture levels.
Body butter is great for dry skin, and lotion is beneficial for skin that needs hydration.
Can You Use Body Butter As Lotion?
Yes, in a pinch, body butter will do. But eventually, you might want to introduce a lighter water-based lotion for hydration.
Homemade body butter, which typically contains zero water, will not give you the right amount of hydration in the long run. If you're using body butter, apply it to damp skin right after your shower to lock in moisture.
Some store-bought body butters contain water, however, and can be beneficial long-term, especially in the dry winter months.
When to Use Body Butter and Lotion
Opt for body butter when your skin craves a luxurious, deeply moisturizing treatment, especially in areas prone to dryness like elbows, knees, and heels. Body butter is best applied after a bath or shower before going to bed. So that its richness has time to sink into the skin.
Meanwhile, lotion is a convenient, everyday moisturizer suitable for maintaining hydration throughout the day. You can apply it easily to cover all areas of your body multiple times a day if needed.
