If you've never tried emulsified body scrubs, then you're in for a treat - they feel divine on the skin! They wash off in a creamy, luxurious fashion and leave nothing behind but smooth and nourished skin.💫
This beautiful salt scrub is a step up from a basic DIY scrub because we're adding an emulsifier. When in touch with water, it will turn into a lotion-like consistency and wash off beautifully. It won't leave your tub slippery either, which is a big plus.
What I love most, though, is that it's a scrub and a lotion all in one! 😮And if you're a busy sports mom, like me, this could be a game-changer!

How to Make it Yours
What kinds of salt to use?
I like using Epsom salt here because to me it has just the right amount of graininess. With Epsom salt, you get big salt particles and not-so-big particles. You could also opt for fine sea salt, and for some extra scrubbiness, swap out ¼ of it for coarse salt. Pink Himalayan salt is lovely as well.
Depending on your preference, you can adjust the level of coarseness. Salt scrubs are great for dry, rough areas on your body, especially your feet, but I wouldn't use them on the face.
What kind of oil to use?
Any lightweight oil would be great here (grapeseed, avocado, sweet almond). I would choose a fairly inexpensive oil since most of it will go down the drain eventually 😉
What about coconut oil?
I wouldn't opt for coconut oil, simply because its consistency fluctuates a lot depending on the temperature. Meaning, in the summer, you could have a scrub that's runny and in the winter rock-solid.

Do I need to add a preservative?
Emulsified body scrubs are oil-based products that technically don't require a preservative. But the way this scrub is used - in a wet environment, scooped out with damp fingers- makes it very likely that water will eventually find its way in. Water is a breeding ground for bacteria and mold.
I always add it, since I know I'm not good at keeping it dry. But if you're very diligent about how you use this scrub, like using a dry spoon to scoop it out and turning your shower off before opening the jar, you might be able to skip it.
What container to use?
I know all these pretty glass mason jars with the flip lid are so cute, but I'd be wary of bringing anything that's glass into a shower or bath. Too many tiles, too much slip...🙈
If you have your mind set on making this scrub preservative-free, consider using a squeeze tube. You might have to tweak the recipe and add more liquid oil for it to be squeezable. But it's worth a try, that way water won't come in.
