Ingredients
- 1 lb melt and pour soap base - there are many to choose from, I like goat milk and clear olive oil
- 1 teaspoon turmeric powder - easy to find in the supermarket spice aisle or online
- 1 Tbsp water or rubbing alcohol - to dilute turmeric powder and avoid clumps
- 1.5 teaspoon (8g) lemongrass essential oil (optional) - for scent, has antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties
- 1 tsp sesame seed oil (optional) - for extra skin nourishment
Equipment
- medium heat-proof glass measuring cup or double boiler
- silicone soap mold
- whisk
- small cup to dilute turmeric
- spray bottle to fill with rubbing alcohol (optional)
How to Make Turmeric Soap
- Cut the soap base into small chunks - melt and pour soap bases usually come in 2 lbs packs, so roughly use ½ of it. Place chunks in a microwave-safe bowl.
- Mix turmeric powder with water/ rubbing alcohol - I find this step helps prevent clumps and speeds up the mixing process later.
- Melt soap base - if you're using a microwave do 20-second bursts, stirring between each one until just melted. Be very careful not to overheat, it happens quickly. Another option is to use a water bath where you place the glass measuring cup inside a slightly bigger pot filled with water over medium heat on the stove.
- Add diluted turmeric powder, essential oil, and sesame oil - whisk thoroughly until evenly incorporated, you want to work quickly here since the soap base will cool and thicken.
- Pour into the mold - carefully pour the soap base into the mold, stopping just before you reach the rim
- Spray top with rubbing alcohol - this step is optional but helps bust these pesky air bubbles
- Let cool and harden - this will take a couple of hours, be sure that the soap is fully cooled before removing it from the mold
- Unmold - release each soap bar from the mold by pulling on each side first and then pushing from the bottom
- Store - melt and pour soap needs to be stored in a small airtight container, ziplock bag, or wrapped in plastic if not used immediately. To extend its shelf life and prevent little sweat beads from forming on the surface keep it away from humidity as much as possible.
