How to Cut a Mango

Learn how to easily slice or cut a mango into cubes, even when it's not perfectly ripe.

I've learned this method of cutting a mango from my mom, who always made sure we had fresh fruit to eat throughout the day. She has probably cut more mangoes this way than she would care to admit 🙃.

You might have seen a different method before, the one where you slice into the mango half with the skin still on and then scoop it out with a spoon. But here's why this method works better in a lot of cases.

Why it Works

  • works with mangoes that aren't fully ripe and still on the firmer side
  • works with slightly overripe mangoes without bruising them
  • makes it easy if you want smaller cubes - gives you full control over the size
  • less waste - you're not wasting anything, not even around the pit. Here's an image of how much was still left inside the mango half when I did the scoop method, compared to only peeling the skin on the very outside.
mango half with lots of mango still in it.

What You'll Need

  • ripe mango
  • vegetable peeler
  • cutting board
  • sharp knife

Instructions

  1. Slice off the top portion where the stem used to connect to the fruit
  1. Using a vegetable peeler, peel the entire mango
  1. Stand the mango upright where you cut the stem off
  2. As close as possible to the pit, cut one half off
  1. Turn it around and do it on the other side
  2. Place one mango half flat on the cutting board and slice into small strips

Pro Tip: for extra small cubes, if you're making kids' salsa, for example, slice the mango half lengthwise once

7. For cubes, cut the mango slices once more, perpendicular to the first cut

8. Lastly, I like to clean up the meat around the pit in order not to waste it.
