This red, white, and blue fruit salad is easy to make with fresh berries and star-shaped apples reminiscent of the American flag. Make it with your favorite fruit and enjoy it on a hot summer day!
This star-spangled fruit salad is a great addition to summer picnics, Labor Day, and Independence Day parties, but you can really serve it any time. Get creative, and use a cookie cutter that is different in shape and will match any theme.
Friend, this concludes my little series of 4th of July-inspired desserts. Since Memorial Day weekend, we've made patriotic chocolate bark, red, white, and blue Rice Krispie treats, jello shot mocktails, and now a fresh fruit salad. They're all sure to be a hit for patriotic holidays and summer barbecues.
Ingredients
- Fresh Strawberries - get them when they're in season, and buy organic if possible; other red fruits you can use are: watermelon, raspberries, red grapes and pomegranate seeds
- Fresh Blueberries - buy organic if possible; there aren't many blue fruits out there, but sometimes you can find dark blue grapes to substitute with
- Pink Lady Apples - you can use a different variety, but we found these brown the least and are very white on the inside. We used a bunch because the kids had so much fun with this, so be prepared. You can also use a different white fruit, like bananas (beware of browning), honeydew melon, white peaches or canary melons
- Lemon or lime juice - optional, but will keep apple shapes from browning
See recipe card for quantities.
Instructions
- Prepare the Strawberries: Begin by rinsing your strawberries. Quarter them and place them in a large bowl.
- Add the Blueberries: Wash the blueberries and add them to the bowl with the strawberries. Gently toss to mix.
- Create Apple Stars: Wash the apple(s). Slice apple into ½ inch slices. Cut out stars from the apple slices using a small star-shaped cookie cutter. This step not only adds a festive touch but also makes the salad visually appealing and is fun to do!
- Add Lemon Juice: Mix apple stars with lemon juice in a small bowl.
- Combine Everything: Add the star shapes to the bowl with the other fruits. Toss everything gently to mix without crushing the fruits.
- Chill and Serve: Chill the fruit salad until ready to serve.
Variations
- Add different fruits - fruits like mango, grapes, pineapple, and cantaloupe are a great addition if you're not worried about veering off with the red, white, and blue theme
- Garnish - with fresh mint leaves or sliced almonds
- Add a dressing - I usually sprinkle some cane sugar or maple syrup and add a splash of fruit juice, like pineapple juice over the fruit salad and toss, but you can add a delicious fruit salad dressing with orange, honey, and lemon zest as well

Storage
Fruit salad is best enjoyed fresh, but you can keep it in the fridge for 1-2 days. Before storing, drain any excess liquid from the bowl to prevent the fruit from turning too soggy.
